“So anybody want to race 5k in the morning?”, I asked. Harmless question. Sydney said, “Yes!”. Reagan said, “OK, I want to beat Sydney”. Kayla pops out, “Me too!”. What? You are 6! You can run 3.1 miles at 10,000 feet. But I didn’t tell her that. Let’s see how it plays out. Ignorance is bliss…for her.
In a disappointing move, the race did not start as usual with the lighting of some fireworks. Bogus. But we were off. Kayla went hot of the chute. In Leadville? Who does that? 2011. But then the climb up 6th Street. Kind of a proud moment for a Dad that gets his thrills running here. My kid is on course (for a bit) cruising up the hill.
Mile 1 was pretty good. Mile 2 slowed down. Lots of spring, walk combos. She didn’t want to pace it right. Not her style. We hit the hill looking back down Harrison Ave and it was smooth sailing.
She has the lane to herself. People were cheering her on from the sides. Nice to get random shout-outs.
Crossed the line to find the big sisters done about 4 minutes ahead of us. That’s not a lot of time. This pacer must have did a great job! And the runner wasn’t too bad either.
Live action from the final stretch…
