Back from a long weekend in Leadville. Brooks came up and stayed Friday night and we ran 20 miles on the Colorado Trail on Saturday morning. I was off all morning but it was good to get out with him and do 20 miles of that rolling crap. I don't train that stuff much so its great to do it. My mind kept throwing me into hiking mode when I probably should have stayed in a running gear more. That's going to take a bit of mental toughness come race day. The cooler weather is such a relief up there. Its glorious running there right now.
On Sunday, we finally took a ride on the Leadville train. Its OK. Its just out and back to the Climax mine. Apparently, the guy bought the whole train, tracks, etc. back in the 90s for $10. Everyone seems excited about the mine reopening that is underway right now. I am excited if there is a positive economic impact for the town. I want the town to remain quaint but its needs a little less struggle.
On Monday, the Courage Classic bike ride was still underway. I watched a ton of riders come right by the house. So I opted to skip a 14er and go for a run instead of climbing. I took my usual route around the lake. Felt pretty steady and solid even though I was off by 5 minutes on the time to Mayqueen. Then I ran the road back alongside of a cluster of bikers. It was fun trying to keep pace with them up the hills only to be left in the dust on the next descent. Had a few riders ask me if I was training for Leadville. That used to be an exciting question to say yes to. Now it was more like "yeah, again".
Headed to RMNP next weekend for a scout camping trip there. Never stayed in the park. Thinking about a Longs Peak ascent from the north side. Straight up the Trough from the bottom. Looks sketchy but friends are saying its not bad. Not sure if I will commit the time though. Otherwise, just some trail discovery out that way. Never ran in RMNP other than Longs ascents from the normal east TH.
The plans for the night run are heating up for August 4th. I have gotten about 30+ RSVPs in various forms...emails, conversations, tweets, etc. I figure some will flake. Its on rain or shine. Here is the official event page if you want to RSVP there. Final instructions will be posted the Monday before the event.
A few more tidbits:
+ There is a 5K in Leadville the morning of the night run. Interest?
+ Boom Days Festival is that weekend.
+ I have limited space indoors and plenty of camping space outdoors.
+ My wife and kids will be at the house during the day and run. So you can make it a family thing and leave them behind while we run.
+ ATV rides all weekend. I found out how to cross to the east valley too!
+ There will be no aid on the run. But there is a water re-fill about 1/2 way through at Mayqueen.
+ Might need to have a shake-out run Sunday morning...
