Festivals are always a mixed bag. Lots of bands. Some new to me, some old to me. And the sets are always very fixed because of the short timeline. But this year, a single band made me buy a ticket to this show: Bullet! Unfortunately, they were the first real band on the main stage so that meant they played early. I got done working and instantly found myself in a sea of traffic southbound on I-25. Ugh. I might miss them play. They start at 5:50. I was able to work a few shortcuts, get to my prime “nobody knows about it” parking spot, and it was exactly 5:45. Damn! I tucked in all my accessories like keys and phones and ran 5K pace the distance to the stadium. Made quick work of the line and popped out at the top of the amphitheater as Bullet was mid-way through song #1! Time to rock — once I get down into the front row in the pit. Always gotta be down front at Fiddler’s!

On the short list of band that have lots of songs on my running iPod playlist, Bullet is in the top 3. Just great stuff. Really enjoyed the last album. Saw these guys headline a small show downtown last year. Definitely was amazing. Wasn’t so excited about the early billing for them but glad to see them out. They didn’t waste a lot of time given the 45 minute set and hit all the big songs that I expected to hear. The price of admission was filled for me with this one performance. Mostly them on the video below. Not too exciting when its daylight out but this band produced the only true mosh pit of the night.

Seether

Uproar Festival 2011

I was curious how Seether would go over for me. Never seen them before. From South Africa if you didn’t know but they seem like dudes from Kentucky. I thought Shaun was great. Possibly the best artist of the night given he played lead guitar and sings the hell out of those songs. Sort of looks just like Jack Black. No real chatter from him. Just ran through the set and got off stage. Enjoyed the performance. Definitely will look to see them again at some point with a longer set.

Sevendust

Uproar Festival 2011

There was a side stage setup outside of the amphitheater with a whole different line up going on. When I came by them on my way in, I saw Black Cloud Collective playing. That wasn’t on the bill that I saw. Bummer. Missed them. Oh well. But I ran out to see the closer on that stage, Sevendust. Their music is so intense I had to see this live. It did not disappoint. I couldn’t even get close to the stage as you can tell from my photo. But their lead singer appeared to be this ripped black dude backed by a bunch of white dudes ala Killswitch. And that dude had lungs. Man. Very heavy. I listened to a bunch of songs but then had to bail on them due to a desire to eat.

3 Days Grace

Grabbed some food and went and sat up in the field to enjoy my dinner. Always cool to be up high and see how far down the actual stage is where my seats are. I know all this band’s music because they play it on Sirius Octane a lot. Good songs. But I felt like it was “chick rock” or something. Maybe “frat boy” metal. I don’t know. The lead singer kept saying stuff like “You know the words”. Yeah, we probably do but let’s us figure that out. Just didn’t dig the performance but I think the crowd did. These guys clearly have sold some records given their 2nd place billing on the night. Near the end of their set, I migrated back to the pit for the final act of the night.

I dig skulls. I love the death bat. But add fire? SCORE! Pretty sweet. I saw this band at this same place last year as an opener for Disturbed. I had no expectations then and they left me very excited. So I knew what I was in for tonight and they brought the same show and it was great. The “kids” really like this bad. I dig them too but they aren’t like a top 10 band for me. The kid next to me was telling me before they started playing that they are “the next Metallica”. I felt old enough and qualified enough to kindly dismiss his theory. But these guys do have pretty deep, long and winding songs like Metallica of yester-year. Solid band. Great music. Cranking out the big songs and filling seats. I wasn’t sure if I would stay for the whole set but ended up watching every minute of it once again. Excited to see these guys progress.

Video

Small sampling of what was going on up front for the night. Tried to capture a few quick vibes but my phone was on the verge of dead all night. Oh well. Mostly Bullet in the video with a taste of the rest. Enjoy.

Overall, another great night given the festival limitations. Felt like a sampling of a lot of great bands to inspire future concert attendance. Glad my wife let me get out once again. That’s 2 concerts in 4 days with another one on tap for this weekend. I could get used to this!

  • Killer night! ‘the next Metallica’ is a pretty bold thing to say. I guess we’ll see in 20 years if he was right.
