The summer concerts came to an end for me tonight. The concluding show was a new rock metal festival called UPROAR. There were 2 stages and the show started at 2 PM. Since I am an adult and I am supposed to work during the day, I opted to skip the bands on the 2nd stage. Was bummed to miss out on Airborne but that was the only one. The rest could have been good but oh well.
On the main stage, the evening started with Halestorm. I got there during their set and promptly grabbed food and a beer and sat in the lawn to eat before resuming my normal position...down front. Back to the pit!
It was a little more raw down there than when we saw Green Day a few weeks back and it was full of ladies in the pit. Tonight we were back to shirtless dudes ready to bump and mosh. Stone Sour was up next. New album last week so they got right into some new tunes and played some favorites. I sort of hate festival shows when a band I like is 3rd from the top because the set is so short. No encore. Just a mix of songs for maybe 45 minutes and they were done. I hadn't seen Stone Sour before and I got pretty much what I expected. However, its tough not to picture Corey in his Slipknot mask and wishing this show was another Slipknot show instead -- god damn, those are hard core shows. But they stuck to the script. Corey interacted with us down low a lot so that was cool.
Oh, and I noticed this gear case next to the stage. Says "Slipknot Root" on it. Nice.
Next up was Avenged Sevenfold. Admittedly, I am not a huge fan. Have some songs. Hear them all the time on the radio. But just don't dig them that much. However, the crowd was totally ready for them. The majority of t-shirts in the crowd were fans. They had the most elaborate stage of the night with a graveyard settings, big flames, and they even dropped a dude from a noose to start the show. He hung there through the first song! I ended up getting out of the pit 1/2 through the set to go pee and prepare for Disturbed. Here is a shot from in between the lawn and the seats of the stage.
Came back down just as Avenged was finishing up and getting off stage. The pit was clearing for bathroom breaks, so I moved right back up to the front. A little wait then Disturbed took the stage. Seen them a bunch of times now and the show is pretty standard but always solid. The mosh pit behind me was getting nutty and they were pulling people out via security. Kind of rough and weird. A girl right in front of me got a boot to the head by a crowd surfer so she opted out and went over the fence. Slide forward me! On the front line for 1/2 the show. Great view of the entire stage, set, side stage and all. However, David never really looks down during the performance so you don't get the bonding that other performers lay down. Whatever. The set was longer than the others but with the early curfew at Fiddlers on weekdays, we were done by 10:30.
Another great summer of music outdoors in Colorado. Hit all my favorite venues and saw a bunch of great metal shows. Looking forward to some small indoor shows over the winter before we get back outside again in 2011!
