Permalink RV Trip: The Million Dollar Highway

We woke up in Ouray to another glorious warm morning in the mountains. The girls went outside and played near the RV for quite a while just playing various make believe games. The big thing Sydney is into this trip is photography. She has her small digital camera and she makes Reagan pose everywhere for pictures. Then they switch and do it all over again. I got excited and had Sydney start taking pictures of Kim and I with my SLR. She didn’t do too bad!

Ouray

Ouray is such a beautiful town. Its nickname is the “Switzerland of America”. Wish it was closer.

Ouray

It was slow going because we kept stopping at each overlook to let Sydney take more photos. So we did too! It was kind of nice to be able to just exit the RV quickly and see everything then jump back in. Kids could just return to their positions and strap in. No car seats (except for Kayla).

Million Dollar Highway

People had warned me that this road would be tight. It was but it wasn’t bad at all. The part with no guardrails and huge drop down a cliff wasn’t great for Kim as she sat in the passenger seat looking over the edge. But never fear! I kept my eyes on the road and hands off my iPhone and piloted the big rig successfully through until we got to Silverton!

Driving

I was sort of excited to come to Silverton. It is home to the baddest 100 mile race in the land — the Hardrock 100. I was all excited to see the big rock at the start/finish line that everyone kisses upon completing the race. I went to where I believed it to be but it was nowhere to be found. So I called 100 mile extraordinaire Brownie…where’s the damn rock, dude? He goes on to tell me that they keep it in some rock warehouse and only bring it out for the race. Bummer. Hope to see it because I was curious if it would spark any desire to return to Sliverton in the future for a jog. So here is a random picture from someones blog so Kim can see what I was talking about.

How about seeing a train instead? The trains were pulling in from Durango. Sliverton has a bustling shopping district mostly because these trains arrive multiple times a day full of tourists.

Train

This 70 mile drive to Durango from Ouray continued on but was taking quite a while with the stops. The kids were ready to get out of the RV. So we motored on through and made it to our RV resort north of Durango for the night. Right on the river, it was a nice cool place to setup camp and relax after a long but beautiful drive.
