Permalink Weekly Training Summary (53.08 miles / 7:46:56)

Taper is in full swing.

BTW, I found myself laughing inside that a taper week has me at 50+ miles. That was the solid weekly total I was running prior to my previous 50 miler in 2008. Felt like a “death march” back then. Point being that running continues to be about consistency over longer periods of time.

Mon - 10M
Tue - 13M
Wed - 5M / 5M
Thu - 5M / 5M w/ hills
Fri - Green Mountain
Sat - Off (Rain)
Sun - 4M (Rain)

This was a weird week but it comes at a perfect time. The kids were in zoo camp this week which requires a morning, noon, and afternoon drop off or pickup at the Denver Zoo from Longmont. The kids love this camp so we do it…for the children. I took the morning shift most days. So by the time I completed the round trip, I had cut way into my morning run schedule. It was a taper week so that was a good excuse to keep it easy.

Had some super hot runs during the week that I felt comfortable in. Then we got a weird weather system here in Colorado this weekend which has us in the 40s (it was 90+ during the week) and raining. It rarely rains here in the summer so this is odd. Should really help keep things green for a few extra minutes around here. But its not conducive to running. So sure, I could HTFU but why? Its a taper week! So its keeping me inside for the most part and not feeling too guilty about it. I had planned on some decent efforts this weekend and then go cold turkey into the week. However, I think I might change that up after these two slow weekend days and start a small ramp up until race day. Might keep things looser and keep me from having to reinvent running on Saturday morning when the gun goes off. I want to feel on top of my game.

Race is Saturday and I posted my preview yesterday. Wanted to write it up a bit because many haven’t heard of this race. And I didn’t want to have to explain every detail of what its about during the post race report. We will be on vacation after the race so hoping to enjoy my recovery spending time with the family and enjoying the sites of SW Colorado for a week. Then its off to Leadville for training camp. We run May Queen to Twin Lakes on Saturday. Then a double crossing of Hope Pass on Sunday. Should be a terrific time! We obtain the home on wheels this coming Wednesday. I will give you a tour.

Getting pretty stoked for Leadville in any case. Travel plans are made. The mailing lists are getting more active. I read about people seemingly coming out of their dens from the winter to train. I feel encouraged because I have been at it non-stop since January 1st. If they wanted to run the race tomorrow, I would be game. But I know that each of the 68 days between now and then will just further my agenda there. The downside is that summer will be effectively over once Leadville arrives…so let’s not get too excited!

Oh, I almost forgot. TSB is at -1 today post run. Just one more tick and I can breath again! It trends out to +18 on race day if I did nothing more. You can see that the acute load has come down but the fitness is holding. It will start dropping into the week but that is all good. I can combat that with some light workouts. From my research, you want to go into an ultra with a nice positive TSB. You don’t want anything aching or hurting. All fuel stores charged. Its going to be a long day and you want to be 100% for it.
