Permalink Run: Green Mountain [FR/BK] (5.35 mi)

MT100s.

My kids have been in Zoo Camp all week so my runs have been irregular. However, with the hard core taper coming up, I felt like I needed at least one more trip up Green before the race. So I dropped the kids off and drove straight to Boulder for a shot at the front side. After the PR last week on the back, I figured the front was an easy win. Plus, my standing back PR was lower than my front. This shows a flaw since the front is faster by minutes for pretty much everyone. Parked along Baseline because nobody works Friday and everyone was out hiking. Took it casual to the TH and then pushed it up Amp. Wasn’t officially tracking splits but hit the top of Amp in 7 flat. T and JV are like 6 to here. I started to drag in between the 1st and 2nd overlook. Lots of big steps. Brought it back during the turn onto Greenman. Slowed up in the rock fields as not to twist an ankle. Pushed it hard from the snow fence to the summit. Tagged the watch at 40:05. Missed breaking 40 by 5 seconds!?!? Damn. I wasn’t watching the clock or I probably could have done it. Average HR on the ascent was 157. A touch too low. I was monitoring it on the attempt always being sure to run more/harder if I found it dropping. That’s how I use it on these TTs. To keep myself moving at a equally hard pace the entire time.

Its a PR in any case by a minute and 14 seconds. Wasn’t all out but was definitely a hard effort. As with most PRs, this one is temporary. But it felt pretty great to be at 40 flat in any case. Another day and its easily sub-40. However, its only a minute and a few seconds below my back side PR. That is concerning. Either means I don’t know this route as much — which is true. This might have only been my 5th time up it. Lots of weird little turns that cost a second here and there if you aren’t hitting them right on. Or it means that I can’t climb this steep stuff as fast. Probably some of both but I definitely think if I ran the tangents better, it would be worth 30 seconds at least.

Descended slowly via Ranger/Gregory as to not do something stupid.

Longmont Sunrise Stampede 2M and 10k in the morning. Sydney is now not wanting to run the 2M. She keeps asking if they have a 1M race instead. Doesn’t work that way, my dear. So not sure what we are doing now. I am hesitant to go race the 10k because I don’t want to blow something up going into the pre-race week. However, I feel like it would really clean the pipes out and I could PR surely given my taper to date. Plus, its fun to run on my home turf and get a decent finish place. But its not my favorite course. Pretty curvy. Weather is supposed to be shitty anyway. Might have to make the call in the morning.

I went 5.35 miles with an elevation gain of 2,550 feet in 01:17:23, which is an average pace of 14:27. Heart rate average was 138. View my GPS data on Garmin Connect.
