I had been watching all the boys out surfing the last few days and decided to go and get a closer look. So I rented a 15′ long board and grabbed Sydney and we went for a paddle. There we are out there!
We went out as far as the other surfers and hung out watching them do their thing. No pros out here. Small waves. Tourists mostly learning how. Some people got it quick. Others had no chance. Sydney and I decided to go through the motions so we timed a few waves and paddled our hearts out to catch a wave.
I was surprised how quickly you can move across the ocean paddling on a surf board. Some of the dudes were standing and using an oar to really get going. Maybe next time. We had one good wipeout as we caught a wave and went over when the board went sideways on us. I quickly popped up and grabbed Sydney and got her back on the board. That about ruined her interest as falling off was not in the brochure for her.
Surfing really seems like a patience game. A lot of sitting and waiting depending on the conditions. I also got a bit sore in the rib bones from laying on the board and paddling. I wasn’t used to that.
To finish out my rental time, I got Reagan out there. She was afraid at first but it quickly turned to a lot of fun as we played the drums on the board. We motored back out into the surf and watched the guys again. When it was time to come in, I was trying to time it between the lulls so I wouldn’t have a wipeout with her. However, I caught a decent wave without trying and it pushed us all the way back to shore nice and easy. Reagan loved it! I thought it was pretty cool to. Had me jonesing for more another day.
