Disturbed @ Fillmore / Denver, CO / 2009

Another Music as a Weapon tour. I think this is the 4th. 4 bands on the bill: Lacuna Coil, Chimaira, Killswitch Engage and Disturbed. I had only seen Disturbed before. 2 times. Once in this same venue and last summer in Indy. In Indy, they were with Slipknot, which I just saw weeks ago. Small world.

I got there just before Chimaira came on. They had a lot of hard core fans in attendance. I don’t think I had ever heard any of their songs before. They were from Cleveland. I only know one guy from Cleveland. Not bad but nothing jumped out at me. That usually means I buy all their songs on iTunes in a month and they become my new favorite band.

Killswitch came on and put on a good show. Their guitarist is this nutty dude. He kinda frolicked around the stage while playing. Then in between sets he would talk a bunch of non-sense…maybe like Will Ferrell (in character) was on stage. It was also weird seeing a black dude sing heavy metal with 5 other white guys in the band. It was like Hootie and the Blowfish gone metal.

Then it was time for Disturbed. David (lead singer) came out on stage in the same fashion as last time I saw them — wheeled out in the Hannibal Lecter outfit. The orderly undid him and the show began.

The first time I saw Disturbed, David seemed full of himself or something. I had it all wrong. He is just very stoic in his performances. And his language in between songs is now funny to me. Where does he come up with this stuff. Like this one:

Denver, we have a long night ahead of us — gather your strength.

So I gathered it. Not sure what that means. They played all the best songs, did some covers (usual ones like Shout & Land of Confusion), and even put down a medley of other favorites that they didn’t have time for.

The tour has a 2nd show tonight at the same spot. First one sold out so they added a 2nd night. Sometime I need to try and do the 2 night deal. I never do and always wonder if its the same show or something totally different. I have a feeling this guy who I met will be back.

During the encore, I made my way from the sweaty mosh pit to the back to cool down. It was pretty enjoyable to just hang out back there for 2 songs without fighting for my footing constantly.

Overall, good show. Glad to have seen them again.
