Today was the last hike of 2008. We head to the Midwest this weekend for the holidays. So I was in the mood for something to cap off our Fall hiking season. We woke up to weather in the 20s so it felt warm as compared to the last few days of zero degree weather. We dropped the kids off at school and picked up our friend, Sheri. Sheri and Kim have walked together for years and she was ready to try out a Brandon and Kim hiking adventure. The downside is that we always knew we could call Sheri if Kim and I got stuck and couldn’t make it back for kid pickup in time. Now with Sheri with us, we had no option other than to be prompt.

We got down to Boulder Mountain Park quickly. I had decided on Green Mountain. Mostly because I had never been to the top of it and I am trying to get all the Boulder peaks under my belt. Then I should have a good feel for all of them so I can run them next year with those that like to run them. Speak of the devil(s) — we were going up Ranger Trail and down the hill came JV and GZ. I knew they would be out here this morning and we happened to run into each other. We all have talked since the Pikes Peak Marathon but have never met in person. Always great to finally meet those that you follow daily through blogs. There was a good amount of steam pouring off of both these guys. So we posed for a picture — for the blogs of course and they went on their way.

Enough about the guys. How are the ladies doing? Looking pretty good so far.

I brought our poles this time because I figured they would give Kim’s knee a bit of a break. Plus the helped on the snowpacked downhills. You should be able to spot Kim with her bright jacket on. Hard to miss.

Time check! Crap. We were talking too much and time has gotten away from us. We got to the ridge junction. 0.2 miles to go but we are in the “turnaround” time zone. We can’t come this far on the last hike of the year and not summit. So I ran ahead to see just how far we had left as the girls followed behind. It wasn’t far — just a big set of steps (Kim is cursing at me in her head!) and then we are at the top. Here is Sheri making her way up the final few steps to the summit.

Green Mountain

Awesome! We got to the top and took a few pictures to celebrate. I asked Kim if she liked Green or Sanitas better. Green took the prize.

One more group photo! Hey this is nice — we have somebody to take our picture so I don’t have to do the reach and shoot! City of Boulder down in the background behind us.

Green Mountain

To the north, Longs Peak was sitting there taking all the weather itself so we had a clear day.

Green Mountain

There was this cool map thingy up on top for identifying the neighboring peaks.

Green Mountain

This picture almost looks like I am hovering up above Kim. I was just up on a ledge looking at that map. Oh, crap…time’s up. We need to motor down quickly to make it back for kiddy pickup!

Green Mountain

From my GPS, we were about 1.5 hours up and only about 50 minutes back down. We took quite a few breaks on the way up and just enjoyed the day. But we felt like we were cruising on the way down and made it back to school just at the bell. Another successful outing!

Thanks for going, Sheri! Hope you had a great time. Thanks for the hikes in 2008, Kim. Looking forward to more next year!

Worthless pace graph. Elevation looks good though.
