Time To Upgrade

Geek2 Comments

Everything on my desktop PC is coming to a slow crawl. I click on an email and have to wait to view it. I don’t know what the deal is — I think its just my PC aging. So its time for my upgrade. I have been waiting and deciding for months now.

I boiled it down to 2 priorities: 30″ screen and the ability to run Mac OS X and Windows together. That left me with buying either a MacBook Pro or a Mac Pro. Hey, I am a Pro so why not! I already have an original edition MacBook Pro for work. I use it as a secondary development machine and sometimes travel with it. I got it when we had to port MeetingPlace to Mac OS X. So its been a fun toy. I use it around the house from time to time as well.

But I really don’t like the idea of doing day to day work on a laptop. I sit in my same office all day. I want power and lots of it. Plus, Apple hasn’t put together a good docking station yet so you would have to unscrew 50 cables to free the laptop. So I pretty much decided no on that option.

That left me with the Mac Pro…the downside — its expensive! We get Apple discounts through work for home stuff so that helps to the tune of 10-15%. But the RAM and processor upgrades are expensive. Everything is hundreds of dollars here and there. But I only buy a new machine every 5+ years so let’s go for it. Here are the contents of this powerhouse:

Processor: 065-7534 Two 3.0GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon

Memory: 065-7180 16GB (8x2GB)

Graphics Card: 065-7537 NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB

Hard Drive Bay1: 065-7193 1TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/

Hard Drive Bay2: 065-7195 500GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb

Going to put OS X on the 1 TB drive and Windows on the 500 GB drive. 500 GB was the smallest you could order. I love technology. My current Windows box has a 120 GB drive that isn’t full (just apps & OS, no media).

However, I bulked at the Apple 30″ Cinema Display. Its specs are outdated. So I went with a new Dell 30″ that just came out. Its got more connection options that I know what to do with. And all the specs are cutting edge.

So its all ordered and now I wait…is it here yet? Now? Hello? Still waiting!

  • There’s not many things I covet but that is one sweet ass setup there and a hell of games machine as well 🙂

  • Wow, what a setup. A dream machine, for me.

Congrats, enjoy playing with your new beast!
