Permalink Not enough server storage is available to process this command

That is what is said whenever I tried to use a network share on Windows all of sudden. Over the weekend I installed Norton AntiVirus 2005. That was the only change. Google didn’t turn up much. But when I searched the Microsoft Knowledge Base directly I found the answer. So I am posting this so that a better source of the error can be found for future searchers.

Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 177078: Antivirus software may cause Event ID 2011

So let me ask a question — why do we have to change this value ourselves? I mean since the computer knows there is a problem (it logged it) and the value in the registry is less than the max, just increase the damn thing or ask me if I want to! I can imagine “Mr. Home PC User” being stuck and saying computers suck and never figuring stuff like this out.

Thanks alot for this post--this issue seems to also occur with Norton Ghost 9.0 on Windows XP Pro SP2, in addition to Norton AntiVirus. After installing, I was unable to remotely access two out of three drives on the machine where Ghost was installed.

Incrementing the IRPStackSize by 3 (in my case from 11 to 14) solved the problem.

Chris

Ditto for me on the Ghost 9.0/WindowsXP/mapping thing. I installed Ghost on my XP Pro SP2 machine. After that, I was unable to map to the USB Western Digital hard drive connected to the XP machine from my Windows2000 machine. I was, however able to map other shares on the XP machine--just not the USB-connected drive. Adding and raising the value of the IRPStackSize DWORD did the trick. Thanks.

Thanks for the info. I was running into the same problem, but this fixed the issue. I still can't access my external USB2 drive, but at least can see my internals. Will post if I find a fix for external.

Mark

After installing SystemWorks 2005, I was faced with the same problem. My desktop couldn't see my laptop's C Drive, but my laptop could see the desktop's just fine. Editing the registry key on the laptop solved the problem. Thanks very much.

eriador

you can also have a look at that page....

phraze

funny i did not see an IRPStackSize. I am adjusting the sizes hopefully that will help after a reboot

J

Thanks for posting this. Norton Ghost 9.0 and XP SP2 had this issue. In fact IRPStackSize wasn’t even there (this was a new build). Added the key and incremented by 3 (to 18) and works fine now.
Thanks again!

Thanks a lot!
The trick worked and everything is just fine. I didn't install anything but suddenly it stopped working.
Now it's OK

cheers mate.
the M$ knowledge base only hints at making the registry changes on the 'server' machine and not the one experiencing the error message, so I hope this comment helps someone else.

Thanks to all! I never would have figured this one out. Reinstalled Windows on my laptop yesterday and could not get file sharing to work. This fixed it. I don't have Norton. Use Nod32.

I have 9 home computers (all WinXP Pro) networked with one Win2K Server set up as a backup sever. NO primary Domain, Workgroup. I was having a probelm with the "not enough storage space..." error message; after much research, following every step I could find on the internet, nothing worked, including the IRPStackSize and PagedPoolSize. In a nutshell, I had been running McAfee VirusScan 8.0i Enterprise. I uninstalled it and installed a fresh copy of Mcafee VirusScan 10. THIS WAS THE PROBLEM. I uninstalled McAfee VirusScan 10 and the Security Center and all is GREAT. McAfee 10 = bad for networked home computers........

Bob Rion

Just wanted to say thanks. I was going nuts trying to fix a sharing problem and found this post by shoving the entire error message (the 'not enough storage' message) into google. The fix seemed unlikely until I saw that it was caused by Norton. Sometimes I think Norton IS a virus! I found my IRPStacksize at 11, changed it to 15 and all is well. Also got rid of Norton.....

Thanks again.

Dear Brandon, thank you for posting this fix. ----- After double-checking firewalls, security settings, etc., for several weeks, I finally searched Google for: "Not enough server storage is available to process this command." ----- "Server storage" meant nothing to me. -----

Hard drive storage I have plenty of, RAM, too, so I laid the blame on something "stupid" I might have done in setting up firewalls, users, workgroups, computer names, etc. -----

Norton Systemworks 2005 may have changed this parameter, but that will take another trip around the block to figure out. ----- Norton One Button Check obliterates MSN Mail on the Viao notebook. Nothing brings it back except Restoring to a previous Windows XP System State. So, I don't run One Button Checkup on the Sony notebook; it does not have this deleterious effect on my Medion desktop computer, however. -----

Briefly, several of the folders on only one computer on my small (4) wireless home network sudennly became inaccessible. Yet I still had access to an external 250GB Western Digital drive connected to that same computer. I found that confusing, and still do. -----

Anyway, it was not serious because I had Internet access on each computer and three of the computers had no difficulty at all in sharing. Only the Medion desktop folders were locked out. New ones, old ones! It didn't matter. I could copy files to it -- from it -- from, say, the Sony notebook, but I could not open its folders from that Sony. -----

Your fix worked when nothing else did. Three cheers to you! -----

Perfect - thanks for this. I can now share (Win XP, ZoneAlarm, NAV etc)! I increased IRPStackSize by 3 (from 11 to 14), quick re-boot - all fine.

Thank you for the post. I needed to do this after upgrading Systemworks. I am an experienced user and am very unhappy with what Symantec has done. I was informed my virus subscription needed upgrading so I clicked "upgrade now". I paid the few bucks and they upgraded Systemworks and DELETED NORTON ANTIVIRUS FROM MY SYSTEM! That was what I was trying to update. I also have Zonealarm and AVG antivirus on my system and Systemworks is warning me that I have no antivirus or firewall. I am going to say "goodbye" to Symantec.

Tom Theimere

Your listing of this problem and comments saved me a lot of researching. I, too, needed to also increase the IRPStackSize on the PC I was attempting to access - which I didn't see mentioned in the MS documentation.

Jazzerbob

Installed a new XP Pro Notebook for a client, wirelessly networked to an older XP Home Desktop. All fine, except could see, but not access, the Desktop shares from the Notebook. Tried everything, until at last, in desperation, copied the error message into Google search, and like others before me, came up straight away with Brandon's solution. Thanks, Brandon, but like you, I am flabbergasted by the need for a registry hack to provide what should be straightforward, everyday functionality.

Nick Hebb

Thanks for posting this solution - a real time/life saver. I had the problem not because of installing Norton, but because I _uninstalled_ it and replaced it with AVG. So people might want to be on the lookout for that as well.

JD

Thanks You Helped Me figure this out Easely, Not Just Norten that does that, think Kaspersky antivirus may do that as Well, May not be It as Well, did a Lot of Upgrading to 1 Computer including the Antivirus and had that problem since then.

Thanks a Lot

Nathan

Thanks Brandon, you were the missing link between me getting these errors and finding the solution. Nothing to do with Norton for me, but seemed to be down to a new PCI card. Increasing the IRPStackSize to 14 fixed it. Cheers!

JeffO

Thank you all. This network share problem was driving me crazy. My IRPStackSize was set at 20 I tryed raising it and still had same problem. I dont use Norton Anti Virus anymore (slows system down) Using NOD32. But I had Ghost 9 installed. After removing that everything is working fine. Thanks again!!!! PS Is it possible to set IRPStackSize too high? Going to lower it and reinstall Ghost want to see if it works.

GJ

I had to increase my IRPStackSize to 20. BTW the maximum is 50 for XP and W2K.

Pavel Celba

Still valid, still helpful... It is a nightmare to have one drive fully accessible and another one causing problems on remote computer. Thanks for the solution!

Jennifer

Like everyone else, I want to thank you for posting this. I was sure that when I received this message after installing Norton Antivirus 2006 that I was screwed! You saved my company a lot of problems. I can't thank you enough!

Mary Ennis

I've enjoyed my home office using 2 laptops and 1 deskset. What a pain when something happens like this. I googled the sentence "not enough server storage....." and got to this point.
Do I increase by 3 on the originating deskset or on the laptop looking for the access.
Where the heck do I find this. I sure need more help, thanks for any further info. Grandma Ennis

Dan

Thanks for the info, solved my problem.

Dan

Ms. Ennis, you increase this value on the machine that you are trying to access. I increased mine to 20 (windows xp pro) and it worked fine.

Mike Saunders

I thought i was the only one getting this message. I was nervous about changing anything in my system registry, but i did it anyway. I dont use norton antivirus, but this still fixed the problem. (increased IRPStackSize from 11 to 14). I could access my desktops internal hard drive fine from my notebook, but i couldn't access my 250GB external hard drive from my notebook. Now i can access both from my notebook. It's amazing. Thanks Brandon.

Brian

seriously...you rock. :)

fred

thanks. googled the error message and your post came up first. pointing us to the right place was really cool of you. peace.

Chuck

I uninstalled Symantec's Ghost Version 10.0 yesterday and it caused this same problem on my computer regarding the not being able to map drives anymore.

marc

Thanks for posting this, good fix, worked first time. First hit on google for the error, and better than the MS searches.

Malcolm

Many thanks for your tip.

Have been home networking for 6 months with no problem then suddenly, today, I couldn't access external drive on pc from my laptop. No sytem changes on either machine just routine backups.

Youve probably saved me many hours of angst.

Chad

It seems that I am the only only one having this problem but the IRPStackSize doesn't fix. I went all the way from having no entry to adding it from 15 to 50! I still cannot share.

The only way to share is to uninstall the antivirus software! Although the same antivirus is on another PC of mine which works ok!

If you have any ideas! Please help!

ANTIVIRUS on PC1 - with no IRPSTACKSIZE - WORKS
SAME ANTIVIRUS on PC2 with IRPSTACKSIZE tried at different values

Maybe it was implied, but this did not work for me until after I rebooted. THANKS for the post!

As others have said, this thread and link to the MS "patch" was the first listed in my Google search.

And again as others have said, my problem was that PC#1 could access the Laptop, but not t'other way 'round - and this occured AFTER installing the new AVG Free Anti-Virus build 7.5.etc.

I don't know how many times I tried to reinstall my Home Network in the last few days, before seeking help on the web - I think that I've worn out my XP Pro CD ROM...LOL

It appears that MAYBE this new AVG Free AntiVirus removes the IRPStackSize entry, as I had to add it into the parameters manually. I also had to increase the size to 20, rather than the 15 that MS recommend - but as previously stated, XP allows up to 50.

Finally, I had to reboot each machine TWICE - I'm guessing that the first reboot "latches" the new registry value, and the second reboot then resets the network - whatever, 2 boots good - 1 boot not enough IMHO.

In any event, cheers Brandon - if this site enabled Beer Smileys, there would be a good 20x at the end of this post.

Thanks again,

Gelert.

Bob Nickels

Thanks from me also Brandon - this page hit #1 on the Google chart and thus I learned what I needed to know and fixed my basement PC also. For the record, I recently UN-installed Norton, maybe it threw a monkeywrench into the Registry on it's way out the door, all I know is it's worked since until today when I moved the PC and then I get the error. Increased the value from 11 to 15, bang it's back.

Why do we get a perverse thrill out of fixing Windows? Wouldn't it be nice if the damn stuff never broke itself?

Good luck to others who may come this way.

bob

pink

Yes you are right.
Windows XP SP2 and Norton Ghost 9.0. had this problem.

Tim M

Many Thanks. It would appear that Norton Ghost 10 also causes this issue. Thanks to you I got the problem fixed. IRPStack didn't even exist in the registry. First tried 14, no luck. Jumped it up to 18 no luck. Final started working at 24. I would never have figured this out on my own. Thanks again!

Fes

Thanks so much for this info. This network problem had been bugging me for ages. I could access one machine but not the other. I think the initial error message had been different but I finally googled the 'not enough server storage' message and got you straight away.

My machine didn't have the IRPStackSize in the registry either, and I tried it at 15 at first, which didn't work, then at 20, which did! Yay!

Though the MS instructions for creating the new item in the registry miss out the bit where, after creating the IRPStackSize name, you have to then right click (PC) on the name and then choose Modify to complete the rest. Probably self explanatory, but I'm saying it just incase anyone else is unsure. :o))

William C

Thank you so much. I had pretty much given up on solving this problem. I changed the IRPStackSize from 11 to 14 and now everything works fine.

Steve

Thanks for posting the link. I saw the server post. It said nothing about WindowsXP Home and Norton Antivirus. I can share files again on my network.

Tracey

This totally worked - I wasted a couple of hours with windows share help and a PC tech from my husband's work.

Thanks - I had migrated from NT to XP home and tried to connect printer and shared folder to new laptop. 15 was the magic #.

piper

Thanks, Brandon! I google the error and was taken straight to your web site. I went to the MS Support site, applied the fix, and that solved my problem. I really appreciate it!

Hao

It worked. But just as a reminder for people, change the registry of the server computer, not the one you map your hard driver.

Andrew

Thank you for the fix, was exactly right. Your answer was the first and only one I needed to get it sorted and the customer is back to work.

Ben Broughton

Neither my desktop nor laptop had and IRPStackSize value. Creating one on each computer and setting them to the maximum (50) did the trick. 15 did not work. I, too, was able to transfer between machines from the laptop, but not the desktop. Thanks for pointing me to the need to check the laptop registry, too.

Mike Jackson

I know this thread has been running a long time, but just like to say thanks for the simple to follow instructions. Allowed this "Home" user to overcome this problem. Norton 2005 on the desktop probably the cause. Running XP Pro, I updated value from 11 to 14 on the desktop ---- fixed, can now transfer between two laptops and a couple external USB archive drives attached to the desktop!
Mike

wook

Thanks a lot for the fix! I have a new Lenovo T60 notebook that came with Symantec installed. Even though I uninstall ed Symantec and installed nod32, the problem was still there. I inserted the IRPStackSize with a value of 20 and everything worked!

djseed

Had the same problem and just solved it with your help. Both machines in network needed the Lanserver fix. On the Server I was getting the error from the workstation to which I wanted to map. Remember do this fix to all machines in the network.

T150

You can add Acronis True Image Workstation to the list of culprits. Had all the same troubles described by others. Tried adding/increasing IRPStackSize up to 50 to no avail. Removed Acronis (and removed the IRPStackSize entry) and all shares were accessible again. Since Acronis is not A/V, but a pure imaging backup app, ala Norton Ghost, I think the imaging routine/engine must be at fault. Anyway, thanks for hosting/sharing all the comments. Good luck to those who follow... :)

chaosManning

Thank you for this little bit of information, I was ready to throw the damn system out the window.

I too ran into this problem after installing Acronis True Image Home. All of a sudden, no more network drives on that computer. I was able to fix this without removing True Image. There was no IRPStackSize entry in the registry, so I created one with the value of 25. Presto, I have network drives again.

Peter Rump

I'm glad I persevered to the end of the posts! Tried all the earlier remedies to no avail until I came to Acronis, but needed to remove it before access was restored as higher values had no effect. Have asked Acronis for their views. Many thanks.

Darryl

I, too, went crazy trying to figure out why I suddenly could not access my shares.
Acronis True Image 11 Home Edition proved to be the culprit.
After creating the IRPStackSize key with a decimal value of 20 and rebooting, the problem was resolved.
THANK YOU BRANDON!!

Gideon

thanks
I have mcaffee and disabled it
also winxp sp2
ipstack value was missing
created it and set to 15, bounced, didnt work
changed it to 50, bang it works
mucho gracia
now I can share my music and pics (gotta filter the ones out I dont want the ms to see)

Hi guys,

I am one who ALL these solutions have not worked.
I run 2 PCs on a network Via a Linksys router. My machine is Static (for port forwarding torrents :-)) and the other machine automatic DHCP. They are assigned IP all good. I can view the techbench PC from mine and make all sorts of changes, however i cannot do this on the other machine. I get that stupid "not enough server storage’.

I have played with the Stacksize and another knowledge base article. I have changed all sorts of regestry settings and rebooted. I have uninstalled and reinstalled File and printer sharing. I have used simple file sharing. I have Shared and reshared to no avail. I have setup security on shares for Everyone access, i also put in Admins and other accounts i think apply. User, everyone, administrator, administrators etc. NOTHING. I can ping the machines, i can use remote Desktop. I have played with the NETBIOS TCPIP settings. I removed Norton Ghost from my computer (connecting to other pc, its techbench PC that cannot access me). I have resetup on other workgroups not mshome or workgroup. I have setup the same admin accounts and passwords on both machines.

THIS IS DRIVING ME INSANE. I have experienced this on a clients PC before but i never thought i would have to deal with it on my network. Its obviously a problem so apart from wanting to solve it for myself i would like to know the answer to this.

I have also tried addressing my machine from the techbench using my machines static IP 192.168.1.2

Internet all works. Computers can see each other in show workgroup computers and can get past the computer ICON and see that shares, just cant access them.

Hope i have provided enough info for a solution. Cause i really dont want to put my hopes in a reinstallation of both PCs and then setup the Raid again on both... Drive me mad it will.

Cheers,

indie_dev

I remembered this problem occuring back when I installed Norton Internet Security 2007 earlier this year.

I no longer use it (switched to Kaspersky) but installed Norton Ghost 12 yesterday. Boom! Could no longer access ANY drives on the machine.

Searched Google, found this link and a light bulb went off!

The IRPStackSize wasn't even in the registry. So being an XP machine, I created it, bumped the value to 21, rebooted and I can now access my drives from across the network.

Crazy stuff.

Laurie

Had the same problem on the home network. I could not access even the local computer via Windows Explorer/My Network Places/Entire Network/Microsoft Windows Network/ (Computer name)

A solution that worked for me was to change the computer name in (Right click) My Computer/Properties/Computer Name/ (To rename this computer or join a domain, click change.
Reboot then change back to the original name, then reboot again.

5mith

thanks for this.

i will take a shot in your honor.

Gunnar

15 was my magical number, tried for a long time started at 50...

Colin S

This original post is still helping folks - many thanks!
Slight variation for my situation:
After installing True Image 2009, I could still access shared folders on my C drive, but I got the server error msg when I tried to access external USB drive.
But the fix worked a treat!

Jan

Ran into this problem in Windows XP after installing Acronis True Image Home 2009 (v12). Increasing the value didn't help. Tried different values up till 50. Had to remove Acronis and reboot in order to get access back to my shares.

Jim

Thank you for this fix. I had installed Acronis on the server of about 6 machines. Adding the IRPStackSize command and settng to 15 wasn't enough. Increasing to 20 did the trick. Thanks Again.

Russell

Thank you so much for posting this man. Now I can finally map my external hard drive as a network drive! I wonder why when you google what is happening the page to change the irp stack size doesnt come up.

Michael Mann

Like others before me, I was at the end of my tether after loading Acronis True Image Home 2009. I am not keen on altering the registry in XP Pro, but after taking all the precautions, including downloading some windows papers, I dived in. There was no entry for IRPStackSize. The first attempt to add it with a value of 15 made no difference, but making it 18 did the trick and I now have my network back.
I tried asking Acronis for help, but they didn't even reply to my message. In case anyone wants the windows article ref it is 177078.

Gene H

Do you have to remove Acronis from the local machine (the use where the net use is executed) or on the remote machine (the system actually hosting the share/disk drive)

Roman G

All the above didn't help me. I started having this error after WinXP re-install (it was working OK before it) only on a USB drive with shares, shares on C: or internal DVD drives were OK.

The solution that worked for me was to change computer workgroup name.

Peter

I had the same problem until I uninstalled Macrium Reflect.

Jay

I have am having the same problems as far as the message appearing (NOT ENOUGH STORAGE TO PROCESS DEMAND); however, I upgraded my operating system to window 7 and I am unable to file the IRPStackSize. Does anyone know if it is uable another name or file?
