Permalink My H2 Is iPod Equipped

Finally! I got so sick of my FM modulator. That’s where you put something on your iPod (or other MP3 player) and it outputs a low power FM signal that you tune your radio into. Its great technology — in the 1970s! The sound is terrible unless you get it dialed in perfectly. And even then you can’t crank it. Its so frustrating that built-in car stereos are so closed.

Anyway, PAC came out with this awesome device that you plug into the back of your GM stereo and it allows you to use a hidden auxillary feature so you can bring your iPod sound directly into your stereo with high quality. Here is what it looks like.

So with this device finally in hand, I set out to install it. Unfortunately, you have to get access to the back of the stereo and that means taking off the center part of the dash. That part happens to be connected to the center console in between the front seats so that has to come out also.

The Internet is a beautiful thing. A few searches and I found instructions on how to take the dash apart without ruining everything. The nasty part were these freakin’ clips that hold part of the console together. Seems so cheap. I lost one down in the shifter and it only took me a few hours to fish it out.

I ended up hanging the PAC device over one of the air ducts above the stereo. I connected and taped an RCA to stereo/headphone jack to the end and fed that all the way back to the bin inside the center console. I drilled a small hole in the bin and brought the plug right inside of it. Now the iPod can lay in the bin without being unplugged when I am not in the car.

You can see the iPod on top of the center console. Finally, after 9 months of wanting and planning I finally have 10 gigs of songs with me wherever I go!

it's amazing what you have time to do when your wife and kid(s) aren't around.

Sounds like it is about time to pony up for 30 Gigs or more...

Yeah, I am way over full. I have randomize my 10 GB. Hey, there is a 2nd audio input on the part I installed! :)

Sounds like time to pony up for 30 Gigs or more... think of the H2 as a survival environment when you'll sooner or later get stuck high up in Colorado's outback during another legendary whiteout/black ice "storm of the century"... you might go freak'in nuts with only 10 Gigs of tunes to hold you through until the spring thaw...

Quick check of our iTunes library... 8433 songs, 25 days... 75.01 GB recorded at MP3 320 kbps (stereo)... not quite a month's worth... but that an a few cases of lager and you could last through a pretty big storm...

WOW am I impressed with your installation knowledge. Maybe you and the internet can help. A few years ago I bought an 8-Track Tape Player and have been trying to install it. It never seems to work. I think the problem is the car so I have purchased several new cars in the mean time but still no luck. Can you make a house call and install this state of the art electronic device? It is still in the orginal box and I have all the pieces. Can't wait to be able to crank up the music and listen to some of your favorite groups!

Brandon Fuller

What's an 8-track? ;)

hey. im in the process of building a computer to put in my h2. ive already done alot of wiring so i know the inside of the dash pretty well. i was planning on buying the pac adapter, but was curious as to whether or not you could attach it at the amp as apposed to the rear of the stereo, which would make the whole job ALOT easier. thanks for any advice.

Brandon Fuller

I still have dreams of doing the computer in there. I want to be able to drive into the garage and have the truck come on to my WiFi network so I can auto-update the songs in the truck, etc. Seems fun. Curious what types of applications you are going to use it for.

I don't know much more about the PAC device than I already stated. Most of the wires seems to be just a pass through. I don't think you can attach at the amp because you wouldn't get the whole AUX functionality working correctly.

kenny

will this work if i already have the optional 2 dvd/tvs in the back ???
thanks

Brandon Fuller

Not sure. I don't know how those are connected into your stereo system right now. I imagine they are using the aux source already.

Randy

I just bought a H2. There are two rocker switches inside the center console? Anyone tell me what they are wired to? I can't figure it out?. Maybe they have something to do with security? DVD player? Video screens?

Please help...it's driving me crazy.

Cheers

f you have the extra income to spend on something as absurd as a Hummer H2, why not just go ahead and get the surgical penis enlargement? Address the cause, not the symptom.

Just got a 2006 H2 and used this: HUMMER iPOD INTERFACE
[GMIP-01]...not only plays through factory stero but also enables Pod to be controlled by the CD player controls and uses the CD display for tune selection etc...seems a more "elegant" solution and only costs $124.00....my guys are now working on getting my IPod video's s video connect to address the rear seat DVD player or GPS display...will let you know

Baerbel

I have a Hummer H2 2004 and want to use my iPod in the car. Can some tell me what to do and where i can get a PAC. I'm living in Europe/Spain and don't know where i can buy something like that or any other way to use the iPod in my car.

I would be happy if someone could help me
