Getting ViralWhile I was travelling in California today, I got a call from my local Colorado ISP who said that my network was shooting out tons of ICMP messages like crazy and flooding my tower. Whoops…did I leave something on? He mentioned the Welchia worm as the possible culprit.
So I tested the single machine that I have remote access to and found nothing. Hmmm. So when I got home tonight, I went through all of my machines to find which was doing this. On my final scan, I found an infected machine. This happens to be my oldest machine and only I use it.
But here is the odd part. This machine has Norton Anti-Virus on it. The virus definitions where last updated just a few days ago (the virus is 2 months old). My full system can ran 2 days ago. But here I run this standalone scanner from Norton and it finds it. So I ask myself, what the hell am I paying for with this anti-virus software anyway? How come the software says it can deal with this specific threat and does not? Weird.
We just got a new version of McAfee at work…maybe its better now.
